Shopify themes, catalogs and app stacks

Shopify Ecommerce Website Development for US and Canadian Brands

Most of Shopify ecommerce website development happens before anyone picks a font: how the catalog is modeled, which parts of a page your team can move without help, which apps earn the scripts they load. KRYLANE Studio is a Shopify Plus Certified Partner, building stores that stay cheap to change after launch.

Shopify is quick to start and easy to outgrow

Opening a store takes an afternoon. Owning one you can still change two years later is a different job. The pattern repeats: a theme licensed in a hurry, products imported with options that made sense at the time, a dozen apps added one problem at a time. Now a size chart edit needs a developer and the product page takes six seconds to paint on a phone.

None of that is the platform failing. Shopify handles hosting, PCI scope, the CDN and a checkout tested at a scale no agency could reproduce. What it does not decide is how your catalog is structured, which blocks a merchandiser can reorder, or whether the reviews widget loads on your returns policy page. Those decisions are the build, and they are where a modest monthly subscription turns into a standing developer bill.

What Shopify ecommerce website development actually involves

Because the platform absorbs so much, a large slice of a traditional build is finished before you start. What is left is the work that separates one store from the next: the catalog model, the theme, the app stack, and the data flowing out to ads and analytics.

The catalog model comes first, because everything hangs off it. Options and variants decide what a shopper can pick and how stock is counted. Tags and automated collection rules decide what appears where, so a rule such as tag equals waterproof builds a collection that fills itself as you add products. Metafields and metaobjects hold the structured detail Shopify's default fields miss: fabric composition, lead time, dosage, a spec sheet PDF. Define those before design starts and the product template has real content to lay out.

Since Online Store 2.0, themes are assembled from sections and blocks declared in JSON templates. Built properly, a merchandiser reorders a landing page, swaps a banner or drops in a testimonial block from the theme editor. Built lazily, you get hardcoded Liquid and a ticket for every change. We usually start from Dawn, the reference theme Shopify maintains, and build the sections a brand needs rather than licensing a heavy Theme Store theme and deleting three quarters of it.

Apps are where store speed goes to die. Review widgets, popups, upsell bars and tag managers each load their own JavaScript on every page, including pages where they do nothing. Apps installed as theme app blocks can be removed cleanly; ones that inject site-wide script tags leave residue after uninstall. Shopify's URLs are fixed as well: products sit under /products/, collections under /collections/, and a product reached through a collection needs a canonical pointing back to its primary address.

What a Shopify build includes

Shopify absorbs the infrastructure, which leaves four things for a build to get right: the catalog, the theme, the app stack and the data going out. Most projects cover the following.

  • Online Store 2.0 theme build

Templates assembled from sections and blocks your team can reorder in the theme editor. We start from Dawn or a theme you already license, then rebuild the sections that carry the brand.

  • Catalog, collections and metafields

Options, variants, SKUs and inventory locations set up the way you actually hold stock, plus automated collection rules, menu structure, and the metafield definitions that carry spec data. Your team fills in a labeled field instead of requesting a code change.

  • Cart, checkout and payments

Cart behavior, Shop Pay and the accelerated wallets, shipping zones and rates, tax registrations, and the order status page. On Plus, checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions for custom discount and shipping rules.

  • App stack chosen and pruned

Every app costs load time and a monthly line item. We keep the smallest set that covers search, reviews and email, prefer theme app blocks over global scripts, and clear out leftovers from the last build.

  • WooCommerce and Magento data migration

Products, variants, customers and order history exported from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce or Squarespace and loaded by CSV or API, with plugin-driven custom fields rebuilt as Shopify metafields on the way in. We identify what a plugin was doing rather than storing before the export runs, because that is the part no importer carries across.

  • Speed and Core Web Vitals

Images served through Shopify CDN transforms at the size actually displayed, third-party scripts deferred or deleted, expensive Liquid loops trimmed, fonts loaded without blocking first paint. Measured in Lighthouse and Shopify's own speed report.

  • Tracking, feeds and Shopify-native SEO

GA4 and ad pixels wired through the Customer Events API instead of pasted script tags, so a theme update cannot quietly break attribution. Product and Breadcrumb structured data, canonical handling for products reached through a collection URL, and editable title and description fields on every template.

How a Shopify ecommerce website development project runs

  1. Free consultation and store review

We review your current platform, catalog size, app list and Shopify plan, then agree page count, product count and revision rounds. The quote follows that scope rather than a guess. No obligation either way.

  2. Catalog and merchandising model

Before any design we settle collections, menus, the variant structure and the metafield definitions. Most builds skip this step. It decides whether the store is still editable in year two.

  3. Design drawn as sections

Home, collection, product, cart and account templates drawn the way Shopify assembles them. Because the layout is sections, a later merchandising change is a drag in the theme editor, not a design round.

  4. Theme development

Liquid, JSON templates and section schema built on an unpublished theme or a development store, so your live shop keeps taking orders throughout. You review working pages on your own devices, not flat screenshots.

  5. Real data and test orders

Your real products load in, because real data exposes the variant and inventory edge cases samples hide. Then test orders across every payment method, shipping zone and tax setting, checked on a phone first.

  6. Cutover and handover

The domain moves, DNS cuts over, the storefront password comes off and the sitemap is resubmitted. Then a recorded walkthrough covering products, collections, discounts and content edits, plus the 15 days of post-launch support included with the Premium build.

Why brands pick KRYLANE for Shopify

  • Shopify Plus Certified Partner

KRYLANE is a Shopify Plus Certified Partner and an official Shopify partner agency. That matters when a project touches checkout extensibility, B2B company accounts or expansion stores, because those are Plus-only and change how a build is scoped on day one.

  • The metafields get decided before the design

Plenty of Shopify projects design a beautiful product page and then find the platform has nowhere to put half of it. We settle options, variants and metafield definitions first, so every block in the design has a field standing behind it and nothing has to be faked in Liquid later.

  • You review it on your own store

The build lives on an unpublished theme inside your Shopify admin, or on a development store you can log into. From the first template onward you open the preview yourself, on your own phone, whenever you want to look. Your live shop keeps taking orders the whole time.

  • Built to scale past launch

The theme and catalog are structured for the store you will have later: more SKUs, a second market through Shopify Markets, a wholesale channel. Adding those should be configuration work rather than a rebuild.

  • Tracking goes in before launch, not after

Analytics, ad pixels and the Shopify sales reports are configured and tested before the store opens, so the first trading week has something to be compared against. A store launched without that can only be argued about.

Industries we build Shopify stores for

Shopify carries far more than apparel. These are the sectors we work in most often.

eCommerce
Deep catalogs and variant-heavy products, where collection rules do most of the selling.
Healthcare
Supplements, devices and clinic retail, where ingredient detail and shipping restrictions must be exact.
Hospitality
Gift cards, merchandise and local pickup, sold beside whatever booking system you run.
Education
Course materials, lab kits and campus merchandise, including bulk and purchase-order style orders.
Professional services
Productized offers and digital downloads sold through Shopify instead of chased by invoice.
Local businesses
One inventory across the shop floor and the website, with local delivery and Shopify POS.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Shopify store build cost?

Our Shopify Basic build is $499 and covers up to 5 pages and 5 products. Premium is $999 for up to 10 pages, 12 products and 15 days of post-launch support. Both are one-time build fees. Your Shopify subscription, any paid theme license and paid apps are billed to you by those vendors. Maintenance is optional at $89/mo.

Should we start from Dawn or license a paid theme?

Dawn is maintained by Shopify and loads fast, which makes it a clean base for custom section work. A paid Theme Store theme buys finished layouts and a big settings panel, at the cost of extra weight and a codebase nobody on the project wrote. If your design sits close to a paid theme's intent, license it. Otherwise start from Dawn.

How much of the Shopify checkout can we actually change?

Less than most people expect. On Basic, Grow and Advanced you control checkout branding, the fields Shopify exposes in settings, and the order status page. Custom logic, extra input fields and reordered content need Shopify Plus, built with checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions. The old checkout.liquid route has been retired, so hand-coded checkouts are no longer possible below Plus.

Do we need Shopify Plus, or is Advanced enough?

Most stores do not need Plus. It earns its fee when you want checkout customization, B2B with company accounts and price lists, several regional storefronts, or Shopify Functions for custom discount and shipping logic. If none of that applies, Advanced usually does the same job for far less. We will tell you which side of that line you are on.

We are on WooCommerce. What moves across to Shopify and what does not?

Products, variants, customers, content pages and historical orders move by CSV or API. What does not move is anything a plugin was doing rather than storing: custom fields need rebuilding as metafields, subscriptions and bookings need a Shopify equivalent, and PHP customization has no counterpart in Liquid. The search side of a replatform, including protecting the traffic your current store already earns, is handled on our ecommerce website development page.

Which Shopify apps actually slow a store down?

Usually the ones that load on every page regardless of need: popup and upsell tools, chat, and tag managers stacked on each other. Where we can, we replace an app with theme code or a native Shopify feature, which removes the script and the monthly fee at once.

Can one Shopify store sell to both the US and Canada?

Yes, through Shopify Markets. One store can present local currency and pricing, market-specific domains or subfolders, and duties calculated at checkout. You still handle the commercial side: tax registration where you have obligations, carrier rates for cross-border shipping, and returns. We configure the storefront half and flag the rest before launch.

What does the optional $89 a month Shopify maintenance cover?

It is an add-on for teams that would rather not own the technical upkeep. Ongoing Shopify care generally means keeping theme and app versions current as the platform ships changes, watching for checkout or speed regressions, taking a theme copy before anything is published, and handling small content edits. Some brands keep it permanently, others only for the months after launch.
